Description
This 3″–4″ (75mm–100mm) Drain Descaling Kit is designed for effective pipe descaling and internal pipe cleaning where traditional methods like jetting or augers fail.
This sewer cleaning kit is meant for removing tough internal deposits including tree root intrusion, cement, tuberculation, tile grout, limescale, and urine scale.
Unlike sewer chain knockers, circular chains work on the entire inner circumference of the pipe. They have a fixed diameter, so more chain is in contact with the pipe wall compared to a regular blockage removal chain. This ensures that the entire inner circumference of the pipe is cleaned, and it also helps protect damaged or weak pipes, as the pipe is not subjected to individual impact blows, as is the case with a regular chain spinning inside a pipe.
Depending on your selection, the chains are available with or without tungsten carbide cutting bits. Chains fitted with carbide bits are intended for metal, ceramic, and heavily scaled pipes, while plain chains are used for PVC applications to prevent damage to the pipe wall during descaling.
If the “both PVC and metal/ceramic pipes” option is selected, the kit includes a full set of chains:
- 1 x 3″ (75mm) chain with carbide bits
- 1 x 3″ (75mm) plain chain
- 1 x 4″ (100mm) chain with carbide bits
- 1 x 4″ (100mm) plain chain
For metal pipe applications, the kit also includes a drill head. This is sometimes required when a pipe is fully blocked, allowing the user to break through compacted debris so the chains can begin effective descaling of the pipe interior. In extreme cases, a Mole may be required, although experienced users typically operate the drill head at a lower speed so it can bounce within the pipe, loosening heavy deposits before the chains complete the descaling process along the pipe wall.
- Pipe size range: 3"–4" (75mm–100mm)
- Applications: Pipe descaling, drain cleaning, pipe restoration
- Compatible pipe types: PVC, clay/metal or both
- Removal capability: Limescale, urine scale, cement, grout, tuberculation, roots
- Shaft type: Flexible shaft with protective sleeve
- Chain type: Circular descaling chains (with or without tungsten carbide bits fused to the cutting edge depending on selection)
- Optional tools: Crown drill head (for heavy blockages in metal/clay pipes)
The kit includes:
Maximum shaft capacity of the carrier:
- ¼" (6mm) & 5/16" (8mm): up to 98ft (30m)
- ⅜" (10mm): up to 65.6ft (20m)
- ½" (12mm): up to 49ft (15m)
The carrier is not designed to hold more than 65.6ft (20 meters) of the ⅜” (10mm) shaft and 49ft (15 meters) of the ½” (12mm) shaft.
Important: Using an imperial Allen key may strip the set screws. We recommend using a metric Allen key instead.
A screw set with metric Allen keys can be found here.
- Lubricate the shaft thoroughly as shown here.
- Select the correct chain type based on pipe material (PVC or metal/ceramic).
- Attach the circular chain to the flexible shaft system.
- Connect the shaft to a drill using a drill-to-shaft adapter and set the torque limiter as shown here.
- Insert into the pipe and begin rotation at controlled speed.
- Allow the circular chains to perform full internal pipe descaling by contacting the entire pipe circumference.
- For heavy blockages, use the crown drill head first to open the passage.
- Flush the pipe after descaling to remove loosened debris.
These chains are popular with municipal clients who remove struvite from wastewater treatment plants, as well as with sewer cleaning tradesmen working in areas with many cast iron and clay pipes. Other common applications include the removal of limescale build-up in pipes, which is especially frequent in areas where groundwater is the main source of water supply.
They are ideal for the quick and effective removal of hard incrustations such as urine scale, limescale, cement, and even tile grout.
Descaling requires a significant amount of torque, so we recommend using a 3/8" (10mm) shaft when possible, as a 5/16" (8mm) shaft is a lightweight option and will not perform as well when it comes to descaling. A 5/16" shaft is more suitable for removing soft blockages such as grease.
Keep in mind that the 3/8" shaft is slightly less flexible and cannot pass through as many bends.
Always lubricate your shaft before first use.
Please follow this link to learn more about why lubrication is important and how to lubricate your flexible shaft.
Do not use the shaft inside the carrier.
When operating, your shaft should be unwound to at least a 1m (3ft) diameter, which is the natural coil size where friction and heat buildup are minimized. Otherwise, friction and heat buildup between the shaft and the sleeve will significantly reduce the shaft's performance and lifespan.
