Hydro jetters and flexible shaft machines are both powerful tools for professional drain cleaning, but they work in very different ways.
A jetting machine uses high-pressure water to break up and flush debris through the pipe, while a flex shaft uses a rotating mechanical cable and cleaning head to physically break through and remove obstructions.
So, which one should you use?
The answer depends largely on what is blocking the pipe, how far down the line the blockage is, and the type of pipe you are cleaning.
In many cases, a jetter is the better choice for long-distance cleaning and soft blockages. However, when you encounter hard deposits, roots, or stubborn blockages, a flex shaft can have a significant advantage.
When a Jetting Machine Has the Advantage
For longer-distance cleaning and regular soft blockages, a hydro jetter is often the more effective solution.
Grease, paper, sludge, and other typical residential obstructions can often be moved efficiently using a large volume of pressurised water. The water can travel through the line and flush loosened material over considerable distances.
This makes jetting particularly useful when the main objective is to flush and clean a long section of pipe rather than mechanically cut through a specific obstruction.
For example, if a residential drain has accumulated grease and sludge over a long section of pipe, a jetter can be an excellent choice. The combination of pressure and water volume allows the operator to loosen the material and carry it further down the line.
However, not every blockage responds well to water pressure.
Where a Flex Shaft Starts to Outperform a Jetter
A flex shaft really starts to show its advantage when dealing with harder and more resistant obstructions.
Examples include:
- Heavy scale and limescale
- Tuberculation
- Root intrusion
- Solid blockages
- Hardened deposits
- Other obstructions that require mechanical cutting
In these situations, a mechanical cutting head can attack the obstruction directly.
Instead of relying on water pressure to break the blockage apart, a flex shaft rotates a cleaning head inside the pipe and mechanically cuts, scrapes, or breaks down the material.
This can make a substantial difference when dealing with particularly stubborn blockages. In some situations, a job that could take significantly longer with a jetter can be completed much faster with a flex shaft.
A flex shaft also uses little or no water during the actual cleaning process, which can be an important advantage in certain environments.
Descaling: Water Pressure vs. Mechanical Cleaning
Descaling is a particularly good example of where the two technologies differ.
Pipe scaling is not necessarily limited to severe tuberculation. Pipes can also develop limescale and mineral deposits that gradually reduce the internal diameter of the pipe.
Jetting can loosen some types of deposits, but it is not always the ideal approach for heavy scale.
One potential problem is that high-pressure water can break larger pieces of scale away from the pipe wall without necessarily reducing them to sufficiently small pieces. Those pieces can then travel further down the line and potentially contribute to another blockage.
A flex shaft takes a different approach.
A suitable mechanical head can be used to break down the deposits directly inside the pipe, reducing the buildup and restoring more of the pipe’s internal diameter.
This makes mechanical descaling particularly useful when the objective is not simply to move the blockage but to remove the material from the pipe walls.
Root Intrusion Requires Mechanical Cutting
Tree roots present another situation where a flex shaft can have a major advantage.
Once roots have entered a drain line, simply pushing water against them does not necessarily solve the problem. The roots need to be physically cut and removed.
A flex shaft equipped with an appropriate root-cutting head can rotate directly against the intrusion and mechanically cut through the roots.
This gives the operator considerably more control over the cleaning process and allows the cutting head to be selected according to the type and severity of the obstruction.
For difficult root intrusion, the ability to put a cutting tool directly against the obstruction is one of the biggest advantages of a flex shaft system.
When Jetting Can Create Additional Problems
There are also situations where introducing a large volume of water into a drainage system can be problematic.
Consider cleaning a common stack or shared drain line in an apartment building.
A jetter can introduce a substantial amount of water into the drainage system. If the line is severely restricted or blocked downstream, that water has to go somewhere.
In the wrong circumstances, this can increase the risk of water backing up into a property or even flooding a lower floor.
A flex shaft works differently. It allows the operator to mechanically attack the obstruction without introducing a large volume of water into the drainage system.
This can make a flex shaft a particularly attractive option when working on shared drainage systems, sensitive properties, or situations where water introduction needs to be minimised.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Jetters and flex shafts are complementary tools.
A jetter is an excellent choice when you need to move large amounts of water through a line, flush soft material, or clean long sections of pipe.
A flex shaft is often the better choice when you need to physically remove a hard obstruction, cut roots, or mechanically descale the inside of a pipe.
