Description
The Lightweight Cutting Tool for flex shaft machines was developed from direct customer feedback and is specifically designed for use with lightweight flexible shafts, while still remaining compatible with larger systems.
Customers reported that the standard Root Cutting Tool was highly effective, but too heavy for smaller flex shaft machines. The lower torque of lightweight shafts made it difficult to maintain speed and cutting performance, especially over longer runs.
However, users discovered a key advantage. When the outer cup blade was removed, the tool became significantly lighter and easier to operate. This resulted in improved speed, better power transfer, and more consistent cutting performance.
Based on this, we are offering a dedicated lightweight version that removes unnecessary mass while maintaining cutting strength.
The tool features solid blades mounted to a central hub, secured to the flex shaft using set screws. Each blade includes a hollow channel, allowing debris to pass through the tool during operation. This prevents material from building up between the blade and the pipe wall. (An issue that would otherwise reduce cutting speed and efficiency).
The cutting teeth are made from tungsten carbide, the same material used to make excavator teeth, providing high durability and long service life under demanding conditions.
At the front, a drill-style head allows the tool to penetrate blockages before the blades expand the cutting action across a wider surface area. This creates a combined action:
- Penetration
- Breaking
- Cleaning
The tool shares some similarities with a circular chain, in that it occupies a large portion of the pipe diameter. However, while circular chains are primarily used for descaling, this tool is designed for removing buildup and blockages, making it more versatile.
It can be used for:
- Cutting roots and wood
- Removing failed pipe liners
- Breaking cement, mortar, and hardened deposits
- Cleaning limescale and tuberculation
- Restoring flow in restricted or blocked pipes
The streamlined design also improves movement through bends and junctions, reducing resistance and allowing smoother operation.
We do not recommend using this tool for removing metal rebar or other metal intrusions in a pipe. For this, we recommend that you see the Picote section on our website. (If you can not see this section on our website, then this means that your local agent has objected to us displaying it, and we recommend that you contact your local Picote dealer).
