In this blog, we’ll walk you through the differences between standard and carbide chains, and help you understand which is best for PVC, cast iron, or clay pipes.
PVC pipes are relatively soft and flexible compared to other materials. Because of this, they require a gentler drain cleaning approach. A plain chain—with no additional cutting attachments—is typically the best option for these pipes.
These chains are designed to remove soft build-ups such as grease, soap, or minor root intrusions without scratching or cracking the pipe wall. Their lighter construction is perfect for the job without posing unnecessary risks.
Cast iron and clay pipes, on the other hand, are much tougher and often face more aggressive build-up, such as scale, rust, or hard-root intrusions. That’s where chains with tungsten carbide teeth come in.
The added abrasiveness makes them ideal for grinding through hardened deposits and stubborn debris that standard chains simply can’t handle. They’re tough, efficient, and built to last—just like the pipes they’re designed for.
For especially fragile or deteriorated cast iron or clay pipes, a carbide teeth on Croco or X-tip chains might be too harsh. In these cases, you might consider more specialized tools like circular chains or the Picote Smart Spider.
These tools are engineered to be aggressive on obstructions but gentle on the pipe walls, offering a safer solution when working with aging infrastructure that may be more brittle.
